Tondo is the largest of the 16 districts of the City of Manila in terms of population and land area. It is also the most densely populated district in the city. Many of the city's slums are located here. The most prominent slum area is the Smokey Mountain, a landfill that was closed in 1995 and was redeveloped into a mid-rise housing for the city's poor.
